There are a plethora of engagement ring styles from a simple plain yellow gold ring, to a platinum hand engraved engagement ring with tons of diamonds and much more in between. Things to be considered in choosing an engagement ring style are: is it going to be worn all the time and how hard are you on your jewelry?

Many styles that may be appealing to you may not be practical. Many engagement ring styles that have a lot of small diamonds or eternity bands that have diamonds all the way round the ring are more subject to loose stones or stones falling out. Some finishes such as sandblast or brushed finish may fade quickly if worn all the time.

Engagement Ring Metals

If you are ordering from an engagement ring professional, your engagement ring can be made in your choice of metal. The most common are yellow gold, white gold, rose gold and platinum. If you decide you want a white color engagement ring, you have two choices: white gold or platinum. White gold and platinum are similar in color but are very different in cost and wear.

Engagement Ring - White Gold Vs. Platinum

Even though both white gold and platinum are white in color there are some very drastic differences. First of all, white gold is not pure white. In order to give it a bright white finish, white gold must be rhodium plated. So if you cut the ring, the inside color will have a slight yellow tint. Once this plating wears off you may notice this difference in color.
Another difference is the way white gold wears versus platinum. When white gold is scratched a very tiny amount of white gold is removed. When platinum is scratched, the metal is only displaced, nothing is removed.

The result is platinum is hard to polish and renew it's appearance. White gold, on the other hand is easily worked on, and can be polished to look new again.

Another major difference is the price. Since platinum is much more rare, it is more expensive. Also, because the same ring in platinum and white gold will weight about 1.5x the amount in platinum, the difference becomes more. The difference in price will become greater in heavier rings.
